A Soul-ish Life

Pastor Paul ( LifeChurch Castle Hill) 2019 February, March

Breaking out of the Soulish Life (Series 1)

A soul-ish life is soul-driven, it is not walking in the Spirit and living in God's Power. It is CARNAL, being directed only by the 5 senses.
Ephesians 4.17-18

Romans 8.6

Ruah Elohim - Spirit of God ( Series 2)

In Genesis 1:1-3 , the Spirit of God was hovering , there's a picture of chaos and darkness, and then "Let there be Light"

How to Walk in the Spirit ( Series 3)

2 Corinthians 5.17 " behold the new has come" speaks of the glorified or the resurrected body.

The resurrected body is described as - "We will be" ...(one day)
but where we are now is "but not yet"

The Spirit man is connected in fellowship with God, however sin separated man from God.

In Ezekiel 36 verse it talks about having a "new heart" and a "new spirit" which is the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthians 6.17, the verse talks about "one Spirit". Galatians 4.6 talks about walking in the Spirit, to live and be led by the Spirit. The body is composed of the natural senses ( we are trained in the natural realm) which affects the soul (the way you feel and think) (eg. anxiety). There is a struggle between the body/soul and the Spirit because we are trained and live in the natural realm. 2 Corinthians 4.16-18 encourages us "do not lose heart", we are prepared by looking at things that are unseen, eternal things... Romans 12.2 verse reminds us that our minds need to be renewed on a daily basis. We need to tutor our minds , in the process of transformation.

1 Corinthians 2.9 -16

9 That is what the Scriptures mean when they say,

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard,

and no mind has imagined

what God has prepared

for those who love him.”

10 But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. 11No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. 12And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

13When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths. 14But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. 15Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. 16For,

“Who can know the Lord’s thoughts?

Who knows enough to teach him?”

But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.

The truth is revealed to us through the Spirit because only the Holy Spirit understands. Because we have received the Spirit of God, we must depend on the Spirit in order to understand the Will of God.

John 14.26

26But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

We have the Helper, who will TEACH us all things and REMIND us (will bring into remembrance).

John 16.1313 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future

The Holy Spirit will GUIDE us into all Truth and will DECLARE the things that are to come.

1 Corinthians 2.12 12 And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

The Spirit is from God and through Him we will freely understand.  It is spiritually discerned.

That is Revelation knowledge. not Education.

(Ephesians 1.17

that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him. (ESV)
John 6.63

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

When things don’t make sense,

Walk in the Spirit and Being led in the Spirit- We need

to TRUST God in all things

to REST in His Promises

to OBEY His promptings – desires that are against the world

1 Corinthians 14:2,4, 14

14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.

Praying in the Spirit, getting the fresh touch from the Word -

For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

How to Discern the prompting of the Spirit (Series 4)

The conscience is in the soul. It functions as an umpire that will determine whether you are doing the will of God or disobeying God's will. Our spirit beings are united with the Holy Spirit, who is the same Spirit upon Jesus during his earthly existence. In Isaiah 11 - the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Might, Knowledge, Fear-of-the-Lord.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

The Powerhouse of God is within us. God is made flesh - on Christmas day. He is God within us, lived in us - at Pentecost.
In Acts 1 and 2, we are:
1. baptised "immersed"
2. infused or "infilled", an indwelling - the Holy Spirit is united with our spirit
3. "overflow" - our personalities are changed- speaking in tongues and utterances
in Acts 2,
And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?
it was "understood by others". God gave us a faculty - the CONSCIENCE -  without the conscience, we will not be able to flow with the will of God, to walk in the reality of God as we are yielded to Him.
The Holy Spirit convicts thru the conscience.
Soul, has -
1. mind - must be renewed daily
2. will - aligned to the will of GOD
3. emotions - must be dictated by the "fruit" of the Holy Spirit (Galatains 5.22)
4. imaginations - dominates our thoughts, affects our will and emotions, healed and redeemed only through Jesus
5. memories - past
6. CONSCIENCE - thru the conscience, we can spiritually discern the promptings of the Holy Spirit 1 Corinthians 1:14

Romans 8.6 - "bear witness with our spirit"  -inward witness - stories of young Samuel, story of Hannah, story of the sons of Jesse
Romans 9.1 - "my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit"
Romans 2.15....accuses or excuses -
15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse "

The conscience accuses, convicts in the presence of sin OR excuses, in obedience to God

1 Timothy 4.2 - Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared -
there is a dangerous point called having a seared conscience..."insincerity of liars whose conscience are seared"

Our CONSCIENCE "bears witness" when it is SENSITIVE,
BUT it can be SUPPRESSED,
or it can be SEARED (desensitized)
or it can be SHIPWRECKED

1 Timothy 1.18 - 18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith<>
Waging the good warfare, by holding FAITH and GOOD CONSCIENCE and when rejecting God, made a "shipwreck of their faith"

Romans 1.9 - For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son,
Acts 23.1 - And looking intently at the council, Paul said, “Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day.”
Acts 24.16 - 16 So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.
Hebrews 9.14
14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our[g] conscience
clear conscience is forgiveness and reconciliation

1 Timothy 1.5 - The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
The conscience will DIRECT you through the WORD of God.

Hebrews 5.11 - 11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil"

2 Corinthians 12

2 Corinthians 12
"9Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 10That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

Poverty in spirit - humility

Propel us to Him - dependence in God alone

Persevere in weakness - troubles cannot be taken out of life

Perfection in weakness - power and strength through the perfecting work of the Holy Spirit
